Something has changed between then and now so that what once seemed relatively simple has become strangely complicated. In the wider culture, hookups have become the norm. A couple of generations ago, it was the societal consensus that the right and appropriate context for sex was marriage. However, the revolution has since advanced so far that sex is now a kind of opening act.
Sex has gone from a rite of consummation to an act of initiation. It is a pre-love, pre-commitment ritual that people insist has no real significance. Now imagine a young man and woman who are vaguely interested in one another. A couple of generations ago they could admit this mutual attraction and perhaps go out together for a no-commitment, no-pressure date. The invitation to dinner and a movie was essentially the invitation to get to know one another.
But in a hookup culture, any date carries the possibility, perhaps even the likelihood, of sex. Meanwhile, in the conservative Christian subculture, courting has become the norm, or at least held up as an ideal.

And then I’m assuming , once you decide which of the many dates you enjoyed most, you go steady and then get married, never divorce, and live happily ever after?
He wasn’t clear on that point. I can say many things in response to this.
Improper dating and courtship practices carry the side effect of leading the large and growing ranks of wounded, jaded, cynical people to decide to just live together—or, more accurately, share a bed together—instead of committing to marriage.

For the many who are delaying the responsibilities of marriage and child-rearing, hooking up has virtually replaced dating. It is a major shift in the culture over the past few decades, says Kathleen Bogle, a professor of sociology and criminal justice at La Salle University.
Young people during one of the most sexually active periods of their lives aren’t necessarily looking for a mate. What used to be a mate-seeking ritual has shifted to hookups: Fun, Not Marriage “Going out on a date is a sort of ironic, obsolete type of thing,” says year-old Elizabeth Welsh, who graduated from college in and now lives in Boston. My point is that we cannot simply state that the Bible “doesn’t mention dating or courtship,” and then think we’re off the hook to pursue this area of our lives either on the world’s terms or however seems best to us without diligent, submissive reference to God’s Word.
Prior to this, courtship was the normal practice. There were even still remnants of prearranged marriage—rooted in European culture—in some pockets of America. Sadly, during this transition from courtship to modern dating the church remained quiet—taking the position that dating was a private matter. But that silence came at a very high cost. Mix into that silence the sexual revolution of the s and s, and one can quickly identify the recipe for disaster. It was during those silent years that millions of Baby boomers were sexually active before marriage.
They dated around and then finally settled down and got married. However, many of those marriages did not work and sadly ended in divorce. The knee-jerk reaction from the church was to flood our teen classes with material on marriage, abstinence, and dating. The pendulum had already swung so far away from courtship that most congregations never even gave it any thought. Thankfully, many congregations are now waking up realizing that the old way of doing things is not working.

Not just word games, but a different perspective. The youth of today are getting ripped off. Instead of enjoying their teen years as they build skills and character, they are getting distracted into the quagmire of relationships which they are not equipped to conduct.
